La Violencia is Not the Whole Story

What do you like most about Medellin?

We've been working hard this week developing ideas and storyboards for our upcoming documentaries. The stories we will tell include the tales of the elders in Sala Mi Barrio (My Neighborhood Room) in the Parques Bibliotecas and the journey of a book from the Bibliometro(a library in the subway). We will investigate how Arranjuez, Comfama's first headquarters, was founded through a soccer game and how gangs once at war can come together during a time of peace to produce a beautiful work of art. We will explore how a daycare center in Comuna 13, what was once one of the most dangerous neighborhoods was founded by hard working mothers. We will interview recipients of EPM’s university grants, visit women attending vocational training workshops, and develop relationships with families living in one of the city’s newest communities, the Pájarito.

This week we tested out the technology given to us by Duke, including HD Flipcams, camcorders, and iPod recorders to answer the question: What do you like most about Medellin? To find out, we interviewed our compañeros at the University.

¿Qué le gusta más de Medellín?
We also made a version in English. In this video, we interviewed ourselves in our favorite hangout, Carlos E Restrepo.

What do you like most about Medellín?

We hope you enjoy this little introduction to our project and look forward to the weeks ahead!

WHO ARE WE?

WELCOME TO MEDELLIN

Funded by generous grants from Duke University and donations from Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, DukeEngage has made it possible for us, a group of six Duke students, to embark on a 7-week civic engagement project, The Historical Memory/Community Literacy Project, in Medellin, Colombia. Our team also includes 57 students from Emerson College in Boston who created a multi-media catalog & a short film "108 things you might not know about medellín".

In collaboration with our directors, Dr. Tamera Marko of Emerson College and Jota Samper of MIT, we are producing 7 short documentaries about various communities in Medellin. We want you know to know that in Medellin, a city in the process of peace, la violencia is not the whole story.
